4 Important questions to ask if you are considering liposuction
- Posted on: Jun 15 2017
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that moves stubborn fat deposits after diet and exercise don’t seem to work. Common areas for this procedure are the thighs, buttocks, face, and belly. A liposuction procedure can be done at the same time as other plastic surgeries like facelifts or tummy tucks.
How can I know if I’m a good candidate for liposuction?
First, be sure you maintain realistic expectations. Liposuction cannot remove cellulite, but you will see a noticeable change in. As with any surgery, liposuction can have risks. With that in mind, the best candidates will be within 30% of their ideal body weight, will be nonsmokers, and are healthy. If you have diabetes, decreased blood flow, or cardiovascular disease, this surgery is not recommended for you.
What will happen at a liposuction consultation?
Before you schedule to have liposuction, you’ll have a consultation with your surgeon to discuss your goals and expectations along with the risks and benefits. This is a great opportunity to talk about your questions and concerns. If you choose to move ahead with the surgery, your surgeon will likely give you diet and alcohol guidelines. Be sure you to mention if you are on any prescription or over the counter drugs, herbal supplements, or have allergies.
What will happen right before liposuction surgery?
A liposuction procedure is scheduled at your doctor’s office or a surgical center. It is usually an outpatient procedure meaning you’ll go home that same day. With that in mind, be sure to have a driver lined up to take you home after the surgery. Right before the surgery begins, your doctor will probably mark the area of your body where the procedure will happen. Next, they may snap photos so you can see a before and after comparison. General anesthesia will then be administered, which will make it, so you are not awake or aware during the surgery.
What will happen after liposuction surgery?
After the surgery, you will notice and feel bruising, soreness, and swelling. These indicators are a normal part of the healing process and are expected. Your doctor may have you wear a compression garment for a month. In some cases, patients are back to their normal activities within two weeks. Regardless of when you feel completely healed, remember to be patient with yourself and with your body.
