Vaginal Rejuvenation: What’s the Deal?
- Posted on: Jun 22 2018
A few years back several housewives from the world of reality TV brought the discussion of female genital plastic surgery into our living rooms and, in turn, the landscape of mainstream thinking regarding plastic surgery possibilities. These particular women tend to spend a lot of time in swimsuits, yoga pants, and other fitness attire so it makes sense they would be on the prowl for procedures that would make them feel more comfortable and, of course, offer them a bit of telegenic magic. The housewives created such a buzz with their talk of the cutting-edge treatment that vaginal rejuvenation has become much more discussed and is no longer a taboo subject. Vaginal rejuvenation procedures include labiaplasty, labia majora reduction, clitoral hood reduction, monsplasty, labial puffing procedures, and laser vaginal treatments.
“Vaginal rejuvenation can improve more than just appearance,” explains board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Orna Fisher. “These procedures can help a woman gain the confidence she’s been lacking and even improve her health and sex life. Everyone wants to feel confident, and with improved confidence, oftentimes, comes enhanced intimacy.”
Dr. Fisher explains that any woman uncomfortable with the appearance of her external genitalia or general discomfort in this area may be a candidate for labiaplasty. “Some women experience embarrassment in certain clothes such as swimwear, and others may feel physical irritation with exercise and other physical activities. It is also possible to have discomfort during sexual intercourse,” she said, continuing, “many women are simply self-conscious and dissatisfied with the appearance of the labia minora. Oftentimes, this is because the labia tissue is too long or hangs down too much outside of the labia majora. The excess skin can involve one side or both and may also extend to the clitoral hood. For many women, this starts becoming noticeable in childhood and worsens over time. For other women, this can occur after childbirth as well as with hormone replacement medication.”
To decide if vaginal rejuvenation is right for you, there are a few key things to know. Most of the time, surgical procedures of the vaginal area do not actually involve the vagina itself. Labiaplasty is performed to reduce the size of the vulva’s inner lips (labia minora). If needed, a clitoral hood reduction also addresses the excess skin surrounding the clitoris. In other words, these procedures only correct tissues of the external female parts, not the vaginal canal. If vaginal tightening is desired, non-surgical laser vaginal rejuvenation can be performed. To follow is a quick look at a variety of vaginal rejuvenation procedures so you can get a general idea before you schedule a consultation with Dr. Fisher.
Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the female external genitalia (labia minora and labia majora). The surgery can be performed purely for cosmetic reasons, as well as for functional and hygienic reasons. Labia minoraplasty reduces the labia minora and gives a neater look to the area.
Labia Majora Reduction
Labia majora reduction is a procedure that reduces the size of the labia majora (outer vaginal lips). This type of labiaplasty is performed on women who feel that the labia majora is too large, loose, deflated or sagging. Some women benefit from reduction of the redundant tissues to give a tighter and firmer appearance.
Clitoral Hood Reduction
Clitoral hood reduction is a procedure often combined with labiaplasty reduction of the labia minora. Oftentimes, when there is extra skin in the region of the labia minora it also extends upward to include the skin of the clitoral hood. Removal of this loose excess skin may be needed in order to have the most attractive and balanced result.
Monsplasty
Monsplasty, or a mons lift, is a surgical procedure that is performed to reduce the excess tissue from the mons pubis, a fat pad located at the top of the pubic region. It may be bulky and obvious in clothing, giving a puffed up or fatty appearance to the pubic area.
Labial Puffing Procedure
On the other end of the spectrum, labial puffing procedures are those that add volume to the labia majora or mons pubis. Some women lose volume in the tissue there, giving a wrinkled, deflated, or saggy appearance. The cause of this depends on body type, weight loss, pregnancy, and aging and may begin to bother some women in their 20s. Labial puffing is performed to rejuvenate this area using fillers or fat transfer to add fullness to the area. This is sometimes done at the same time as labiaplasty to reduce the labia minora, as well as clitoral hood reduction.
V-Lase
As tissues age they lose the elasticity that they once had. V-Lase is a non-surgical vaginal laser procedure used to rejuvenate the vagina. V-Lase restores youthful thickness and moisture to the tissues. It can reduce vaginal dryness, vaginal atrophy, and mild involuntary bladder leakage. As a result, it also leads to enhanced sexual experience for many women. V-Lase uses controlled laser heating to stimulate the production of collagen and a new blood supply to improve thickness and elasticity to the vaginal wall.
