Why Do I Need to wear Sunscreen?

Skin Care San Francisco CA So many patients of ours come in for some of the best treatments available, and we love seeing the results they get. But did you know that some of our very favorite patients aren’t doing all they can do to get the best results from their anti-aging treatments like Fractora skin resurfacing or microneedling?

What could they be doing that affects their results? Well, we’ll give you a hint: it’s more of what they’re not doing. Patients who do not wear sunscreen on a regular basis have more UV damage and thus will likely need more treatments to get the same results as someone who uses sunscreen everyday. Ready to learn more about sunscreen? Keep reading.

Types

There are two main categories of sunscreen: chemical and physical filters. There are only two physical filters: Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. These filters bounce harmful UV rays off of your skin, keeping them from absorbing and causing damage to your DNA. Chemical filters are more numerous, and we couldn’t name them all here. Chemical filters operate in different ways, but they typically absorb the harmful UV rays from the sun. These undergo a chemical reaction to keep UVA and UVB rays from damaging the skin.

Application

So much of skincare these days is about formulation and how each product feels as we apply it. If you’re a texture person, you might find physical sunscreens too chalky, thick, or pasty for everyday use. We don’t blame you. Newer formulations cut back on these problems, as do many chemical formulations. Ultimately, you need to be consistent to get the results from sunscreen, so commit to finding a product that works for you and stick with it.

Chemical sunscreens might cause reactions in people with sensitive skin, so consider testing products before buying a big new bottle. Because chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and undergo a chemical reaction, some ingredients have been known to cause allergic reactions in some people.

Keep the amazing results of your treatments longer by committing to wearing sunscreen every day. Contact us today to schedule a consultation or treatment!
